676/JB

This shape of Bokhara vase crops up less often than the other two shapes.  It comes in two sized, and at eight and tree quarter inches this is the taller one.

Sweet and Sexy

I found this Grey Pebble pattern Streamline coffee set (minus 2 cups and a sugar bowl) at the Sheffield Antiques Emporium last week.  My friend Sheila wasn't working there on the day I called in, but the lady who wrapped the pots for me described the set as sweet, which I think it is, with it's semi useless demitasse coffee cups.   Quite unlike it's seriously sexy counterpart Black Pebble with it sleek Black Panther glaze. Both patterns were designed by Robert Jefferson in 1959 and the Streamline shape by John Aams in 1935.

Bokhara Storage Jar JB

I like to think that my quest to collect a complete set of these Robert Jefferson Bokhara jars is slowly nearing it's completion, though in truth finding the last few missing pieces is taking ever longer.  These pots don't come up on eBay that often and when they do they are increasingly one that I already have. This one is shape 659, and at 16.5 cm tall, it's the largest (I think) of the 4 sizes made.

Drink!

After a good two weeks of excess, drinking is now the last thing on my mind, but I worry that this Purbeck Pottery jug and beaker set could lead me astray.  I don't know much about it but if might date from the 1970's.  And a happy New Year.

Airbrushed perfection

I was dead chuffed to find this super stylish, Midnight Blue glazed "Helios" lamp base, together with it's original perspex shade on eBay recently.  Designed by Robert Jefferson in 1964, this is one of six different lamps in this range, another of which can be seen here.

Back to Black

There's a skill in photographing black vases against a black back-drop that I do not possess, but given this blogs house style, I do try.  The small vase is the new one, to go alongside it big brother, both from the Bokhara range of jars designed by Robert Jefferson in 1964.

Bokhara JC Pattern Storage Jars

These JC pattern Bokhara storage jars were made in 4 sizes.  I've had the little one for quite a few years and its taken until now to find a second., I think these two are the smallest and second to largest, though neither of the seem to match the dimensions given in factory catalogue.

Smallest of Four Bokhara Storage Jars

I've had this little lidded pot in my collection for quite a while, but never posted a photo on here. This jar is hand-thrown in shape 659 and painted in JC patten.

Purbeck Pottery

I found this little stoneware bowl last weekend at the Doncaster Racecourse Antiques Fair.  I'ts the first bit of Purbeck Pottery that I've collected and I'm not sure if its will be the last, or if it's the start of a whole new collecting line.  I don't know very much about Purbeck Pottery but I know it was set up in 1966 by a group of Poole Pottery Employees and that Robert Jefferson joined them after he left Poole in 1967.  I don't as yet know when my dish was made but I will enjoy finding out.

Extra Bokhara

This Jam pot is painted by Mary Lowman in the OEB pattern designed by Robert Jefferson to decorate the Bokhara Jars that Poole was making in the 1960s.  The preserve jar shape, certainly the lid, seems to be more in the style of the "Contour" tableware that Jefferson designed about the same time.  There seems to have been quite a bit of rather free and easy mixing of patterns and shapes at Poole.

It's no. 15 to me

This is the 15th and by quite a long way the biggest Bokhara range pot to join my collection.  The vase shape, painted in JB colours, came in two sizes. This one 675/2, at 8" tall is the larger of the two.  Like the rest of the Bokhara range its hand thrown, and this time painted by Mary Lowman in 1964.

Also available in blue

I saw these for the first time on eBay this month and like their red brothers these spice jar,s designed by Robert Jefferson for Poole Pottery, are hand thrown forerunners if not trials for the Green Diamond spice jars that Poole began making in 1963.  So much choice!

Starting them young

Above is a sweet set of nursery ware designed by Robert Jefferson in 1962.  What you can't see on the mug, in addition to the the appaloosa horse, is that there's a zebra on the other side, and joining the seal, impala and polar bear, on the bowl, is a bactrian camel.  Which does seem like a rather specific group of animals.
The factory mark on the base dates this set to somewhere between 1967-72, so it could have been around in time for my 1st birthday.  And no doubt my collection would have been much better had I started collecting then.  But I have no regrets about this particular missed opportunity, as still I'm too attached to my very practical and happy Melmex plate below to have swapped.

All my birthdays at once

This is just part of a coffee set given to me by a friend, who wakes up early enough on a Sunday to find car boot treasures, and who's kind enough to give this one to me.  The whole set has cups, saucers and side plates too.
This "Contour" tableware designed by Robert Jefferson in 1963/64 was a development on the earlier "Streamline" shapes that John Adams designed in the 1930's, and still used the "Twintone" glazes (in this case C57 - Ice green and Seagull).  However they have a much more modern and sculptural look with the elongated spout and the ergonomic handle shapes being particularly pleasing.
Alternatives to these velum Twintone glazes were latter made available in the form of shiny "Cameo" two colour glazes and several different printed patterns.

Another Egg Baker

The first of my more expensive than usual Poole pots arrived today fresh from eBay, and what a stunner it is, but at this time of year a photo will have to wait until the weekend, when I can be at home in daylight.
In the mean time here's a photo of a very inexpensive pot.  Another egg baker to add to my collection of Robert Jefferson designed Oven-to-Tableware in the jolly yellow coloured Herb Garden range from 1963, this one with a silkscreen printed decoration titled Caraway. More in the range can be seen here and the very eggy patterned "Lucullus" egg baker here.

Bokhara Butter Box Bingo

My latest Bokhara jar, shape number 658, OHB pattern painted by Gwen Haskins has taken it's place alongside my other pots from this range.  With 2 lines so far, it will be a long game before I get a full house - See what I mean here

Robert Jefferson Mermaid Tray 1964

My collection of these Robert Jefferson trays is getting bigger slowly.  There are two others on the blog for anyone who's interested in searching under the tag for Robert Jefferson, and there are a couple of birds and a fish tray and plaque made about the same time.  Unfortunately these are the ones I really want, so I'll just have to keep searching.

Another Bokhara Preserve Jar for the collection

This is number 13 for me, so nearly halfway to having the full set that Robert Jefferson designed. This one is called 655/OB.A and is already posted on the main site.

Swaps

The latest addition to my Bokhara jar collection. Designed by Robert Jefferson in 1964, these hand-thrown jam pots (shape number 657) are painted in OGB pattern by Mary Lowman on the right, with the one on the left carrying mark for Silvia Davis, although she's recorded as working only until 1962.
Anyway the two pot appeared separately on eBay last week and after winning the first (no.12 in my collection), I thought the second could be used to swap with any other Bokhara fans, or maybe might even get used for jam!

Poole Bokhara Jam Pot 657JB

This Poole Pottery jam pot is one of 29 similar pots from the Bokhara range designed by Robert Jefferson in 1964. To me this is number 11 my other 10 can be seen here.  It's another challenge and as I get closer to number 29 they will become harder to find.
