Ruth Pavely painted this one between 1922 and 24, so not long after she started at Poole. The vase is made form a dark red earthenware, with a grey coloured slip, which was used between these dates. The clay feels like its been fired at a slightly higher temperature than the pots made after 1924. Anyway the Portuguese stripe patterns (this one if JU) were originally done by James Radley Young, usually in blue and white, and adapted at this time by Truda Adams.
