Jam Pots to Go

It took a while to collect these three contemporary patterns jam pots, but for the last few years, like so many other pots, they have been stored away in boxes out of sight. So it really doesn't make sense keeping them, and for once I'm listening to reason (my partner!) and listing them on eBay.  From left to right patterns Ariadne (OS), Ripple (OV), and  Constelation (OK). All designed by Alfred Read in 1953.

Boots of Spanish Leather,

Or a restless farewell, to the last of my 1950's Poole?
Most of the Freeform and Contemporary Poole Pottery I've collected (and I never that much really) was sold a few years ago.  So the last few pieces of 1950's Poole look increasingly out of place among  the ever growing numbers of my much busier Art Deco or Delphis pots I'm collecting.  So off they go to eBay, together with this UIL "Slits" pattern, cruet set painted by Gwen Haskins.

Crocodile Tears

I love his square shaped dish, shape number 364. It dates from the mid to late 1950's and is less common than it's oblong counterpart 316, shown in the previous post, that remained in production through the 1960's and 70's for the Delphis and Aegean ranges. The pattern is UFT aka Tears pattern and was painted by Sheila Jenkins. Anyway, I thought for a change I might post a personal note. Though thinking about the title for this post, I'm not sure if the tears might be genuine. I've been working in the NHS for 16 years now but will be handing in my notice in the next few weeks. I never imagined how happy I would feel doing that. I've been offered another job elsewhere and it feels like a huge weight has been lifted from me. But I'm sorry too. I think most people start working in the NHS for pretty selfless reasons. But i'm not sure many other employers treat their staff with more contempt. It's strange how, as a nation, we could imagine ending up with a more caring workforce by increasing targets, monitoring and workload and freezing pay and cutting pensions. Anyway, I'm glad to be out of it, until I get old and sick and need it again, if it's still there.

 

Onion Rings

This dish dates from the 1950's. The pattern UOT, also referred to as Onions, was designed by Ruth Paveley and used on Free form vases at the time. This particular dish was painted by June March.

 

A bit unseasonable

Like the weather my buying has run into a bit of a dry spell during March.  Maybe I've finally managed to use more discernment and just buy pots that really get me excited, but luckily there are still plenty out there that can do that.  Anyway, I have a few photos that have been hanging around at the bottom of the barrel for a while now waiting to be posted.  This tea plate is painted in the "Falling Leaves" pattern designed by Ruth Paveley in the 1950's.  The Plate shape was designed by Alfred Read at about the same time.  And  while it's not made it to the top of my collection, it's nicer than most tea plates and still seems far too nice to scratch with cutlery.

Freeform Vase PV 550

This freeform vase shape number 350 is painted in PV or "burst" pattern and came from ebay last month.

Deja Vu

I sold one of these PQB pattern bowls on eBay in September last year.  Then six months later another one appears on eBay and I end up buying it.  So much for de-cluttering, but this is one of my favourite Contemporary Poole patterns and it doesn't take up a lot of space.  The new bowl was painted by Pat Dightam between 1955 and '58.  The one I sold dated from the same period and was painted by Diane Holloway.

Contemporary Pattern Mustard Pot UFW

This pattern, designed by Ruth Pavely in 1956/57, is also sometimes referred to as "Tears Pattern".  Although I think it looks a bit more cheery than that.  I found this pot on eBay a while back, but have just been prompted to post a picture after seeing an equally sweet cheerful little mustard pot here on Potshots blog

Poole Freeform Vase PRB

This is a wonderfully tactile (egg) shape vase was painted by Gwen Haskins between 1955 and 1959.  I saw it on eBay recently and couldn't help buying it.  I also couldn't afford it. So to make amends, its been posted on my website - on the sales page.  At least I can enjoy looking at it until a buyer turns up.

Poole Freeform Vase YFC Pattern

I've owned this vase for a few years now but think its time I let it go.  It really is a beauty and while taking the photos this afternoon, I really did start to get second thoughts.  But it's listed now for sale next Sunday, and  I have one week left to admire it sitting on my desk.  

The YFT Pattern was designed by Alfred Read in 1953, but the shape dates from the 1920's/30's and would probably have been designed by John Adams.  

Freeform Bottle Shape Vase

This fantastic hand thrown Freeform vase Shape 709 doesn't take up a lot of room at only 5 1/2 inches tall , but it's time for a change of this vase together with a few others are going back on eBay where they came from a few years ago - I think I might miss this one when its gone.

Poole Freeform Bowl 344 PJB

I'm off the the antiques fair at Elescar in the morning so in the hope of finding more gorgeous pots I thought I should plan on listing this on eBay tomorrow night.  I think I've posted a photo of this before on the blog when I first found it at a fair at the Malvern Show Ground last year.  It's one of my favourite "contemporary" patterns, designed by Alfred Read in 1954 and painted on this bowl by Diane Holloway sometime between 1955 and '58.

This small but perfect little vase also came from Lincoln this week.  PT or butterflies Pattern designed by Ruth Paveley, painted by June March sometime between 1955 and '59, on a this 7 cm tall vase, shape number 650 designed by Alfred Read and Guy Sydenham.

Contemporary Pattern Cheese Dish GBG

I've been delaying this post as I liked the last one so much and didn't want to knock it off the top spot too soon. But it could only wait so long and this isn't exactly chopped liver.
I've got a few of these contemporary pattern Cheese dishes recently.  This one is GBG or "basket" pattern.  It's one of the "Contemporary" patterns designed by Anne Read in 1956 or '57 and as well as blue this particular pattern also comes in green, purple or a red/brown.

Something for Everyone

Freeform Butter/Cheese dish UFT Pattern

This is the last and cheapest find from Keddleston Hall last month.  I think, if I was more sophisticated I wouldn't be so drawn to these patterns.  I think, what excites the real purists is the big asymmetrical freeform shaped vases from this era, that have no decoration, or else have the smoky stripy decorations designed by John Read.  Whereas what I get off on, is the domestic, kitchen stuff, with patterns designed by Ruth Pavely - they transport me  straight into a decade that I've never known, and maybe wouldn't have liked, but are just so stylish.

Freeform Bowls - More eBay Sales

It's not easy parting.  I thought I could manage without these two, as I don't really collect Freeform Poole - that much and they were in a box under the spare bed. But then once you've fished them out, had a good look at them again, photographed them, you then realise why you brought them in the first place.  I think they look stunning, but they have to go.

Poole Contemporary Patterned Cucumber Shape Dish 145 TNC

I keep meaning not to collect any more Freeform or Contemporary Poole as the prices are still so high. But I've wanted one of these smoky coloured fat cigar shaped (cucumber) dishes for ages now - to match the other one I have (ROC pattern).  

I always think these look a bit incongruous: The kitsch cucumber shape designed I think by John Adams in the 1930's, and the pattern from the atomic 1950's.  The form insists on been a cucumber with its little tail-end but the pattern keeps trying to turn it into some sort of  racing Zeppelin with red electrons all excited on the surface.
