Blue Aegean

As well as being more or less blue, this Poole Aegean sweet dish has a nice bleached out appearance much more in keeping with something you might find washed up on an eastern Mediterranean beach.  It's signed by Carolyn Wills.

And the Leaves that are Green Turn to Brown

November is almost over, but it's been a late Autumn this year and this plate is really quite vibrant, I think, for Aegean. Which is why it stood out at the Doncaster Racecourse antiques fair a couple of weeks ago.  Unsigned, shape no.3, 8" diameter.

Troublesome Numbers

This Aegean vase is also painted by Diana Davis and, although quite different in shape to the one in previous post, it also has the same shape number (31). The trainspotter (or maybe Trekkie) in me really is unsettled by this anomaly. This particular shape 31 is slip-cast rather than hand-thrown,and there's at least one other slip-cast no. 31 shape that I've seen, either in Aegean and Delphis glazes (many of the same shapes were used for both ranges. Worse still, it's not only 31 that does this shape-shifting: 83, 84 and no doubt 85 are all equally plastic. The only way I've been able to put my mind (and need for order) at ease, is to tell myself that these numbers refer to the vase size and not the shape. 31 is a size number - and to be doubly safe both vases are now going away, back under then bed.

Another Rummaged Pot

This Aegean vase has been hiding under the bed for a couple of years now.   It was hand-thrown, (shape number 31, 10 cm tall) and decorated, using the "silhouette" technique, in a swirly style that is typical of many  Aegean designes.  Signed on the underside by Diana Davis, it dates to between 1973 and 1978.

Aegean Oakleaf

I like Aegean plates best with a dark black/brown and good contrast colourful (not brown) pattern.  Which means I don't find very many Aegean pots to collect.  Anyway Poole did quite a few of these leaf patterns which I think were made using a sgaffito technique, scratching off the dark glaze to reveal the yellow underneath.  This one was decorated by Diana Davis and came to me via the Lincoln Antiques Fair.

Aegean Fish

This Poole Aegean sweet dish came from Lincoln Antiques Fair, a couple of months ago.  I'll be off to that fair again next week, so its high time I posted a photo of this.  As the figurative Aegean patterns go , I think the fish have a bit more appeal, than the boats at least, and the other animals and landscapes that decorate Aegean plates are much less common and probably out of my price range. 

It's shape number 361, 7 inches long, decorated by Carolyn Wills using the silhouette technique.  Carolyn worked at Poole from 1972 until 1979, her sisters (i think) Julia and Laura also Decorated Aegean ware at Poole.

Poole Aegean shape 42 Jane Brewer

This Aegean dish was painted by Jane Brewer in the early 1970's (1972-75).  It's not very colourful and about my least favourite shape for a Poole dish.  So overall, this isn't the most exciting pot, but I'm never sure you have to like everything that you collect, and it does look good grouped with my other recent Aegean eBay acquisitions. Website Update

I've started updating my website.  There's now a new Robert Jefferson Gallery and I'm hoping to update the Twintone and Miscellaneous Galleries with New photos in the coming days.

The vase above is an Aegean shape number 83, 6 inches tall and dates from the 1970's. the photo isn't great here but I think it look quite architectural and reminds me of brutalist concrete structures, or the decoration you might find pressed into concrete on a 1960's underpass.   I have a number of these Aegean Pots that haven't made it on to my website yet but I hope to make amends for that too in the next few days.

Aegean Sweet dish 360

I've been getting a few Aegean dishes like this in recent months.  There always seem to be an awful lot of the brown swirly Aegean plates and vases on eBay but every now and then one that's a bit more graphic pops up. This one is made using a sgraffito technique with the brown glaze/slip been cut into to reveal the green underneath.  I'm hoping I'll have some time next week to get photos of a few of these posted onto my main website.

Unusual Blue Aegean Dish

This one looks much better in real life.  It arrived from eBay still boxed and looks like its never been taken out in 40 years.  Leaf shapes are quite common on Aegean plates but I've not seen many in this blue colour.

Poole Aegean Sweet Tray Carolyn Wills

I don't collect many Aegean pots as lots are just too dull and brown, but this one looked nice and vibrant and came in its original box too. It was Painted by Carolyn Wills between 1972 and 79.
