More Delphis from Newark

These two 5 inch pin dishes were on the same Newark stall.  Both are signed by Jean Millership, one of my favourite painters at Poole.

One I Couldn't Let Get Away

This is the five inch pin dish missing from the photo of the Newark stand in the previous post. Painted by Shirley Campbell in the last 1960's.

Summer of Love

Throughout the Spring of this year I did a reasonable job at slimming down my collection of Poole Dephis plates, but come mid-summer it's all started to get out of hand again.  But then, how could any man resist this simple, but perfectly executed, little floral pin dish.  Fifty years old and fresh as a daisy. So it's now mine from eBay last week, painted by Angela Wyburgh in the late 1960's.

Fish

This 5" shape 49 pin dish came from eBay recently.  It has the 1962-64 Poole Studio mark and matches this bird pin dish that I found a few years ago.  Although the green glaze on the fish dish has a nicer, rougher,  underwater-like,  texture. I wonder if there are any other animals out there.

End of the road

I have some counting to do, but think this will be the 49th shape number 49 pin dish posted on my web page (when I get round to it) here http://www.robspoolepottery.co.uk/Poole_Pottery_Delphis_49er_Gallery.htm It's not the end of the road though, there will always be better looking dishes out there, but adopting a one in/one out rule will help with storage.

Never knowingly undersold

It's not the biggest fair in the world, but the monthly Elsecar Antiques Fair rarely disappoints.  This 5 inch Delphis pin dish, the best of three items I found there yesterday, was priced too keenly to haggle over. 

Looking fresh as a daisy, it was painted by Angela Wyburgh in about 1969.

Pottery and Politics

I remember once a BBC TV "Bargain Hunt" presenter describing Poole Delphis patterns as looking like vomit.  Which of course is a rubbish opinion, and the Christine Tate 5 inch pin dish above is pretty gorgeous for anyone with eyes to see. 

But then looking at it today, of all days, I do feel a bit green. Having grown up in the North of England during the 1980's, seeing the devastation of factory closures, peoples lives and communities torn apart, described at the time as " a price worth paying". The hatred shown by the the the Conservative Party, in government then as now, to anyone who was different.  So gay men and lesbians in their "pretend families" were singled out in new legislation to prevent them from "promoting" their "lifestyles as equivalent",  and Nelson Mandela was condemned as a terrorist.... I could just go on and on really, but I'm still not convinced that politics and pottery mix well.  

But maybe we'd live in a happier country if people were a bit more willing to express their feelings, could be a bit freer in the patterns they paint on pin dishes and listened a little less to BBC commentary on pottery or politics.

Pamela Bevans 1970 pin dish

One of the first Delphis No 49 pin dishes I owned was painted by Pamela Bevans.  Pamela only worked at Poole for 3 years, but signed her work with a different mark for each year she was there, which is very handy for accurate dating.

Carole Holden Pin Dish

This shape 49, 5" Delphis pin dish, painted by Carole Holden in the late 1960's, came from Cottees Auctioneers at the end of last year along with this tiger striped one.

Merry Christmas

Delphis is not just for Christmas

This festive little bauble arrived from eBay a couple of weeks ago, and seems just about the most suitable pot I have for a final post before Christmas.  

Anyway, Angela Wyburgh painted this shape 49 Delphis pin dish in 1968.  She did a lot of symetrical flowery patterns, but this one has a bit more umph  about it, a little more explosive and space-age and  reminds me more of orbiting electrons than wandering stars. But, it'll do for the top of the tree and helpfully will keep shining long after the festivities are over.

Margaret Anderson 49er

Just Like Hubble?

At the start of the summer my old camera died, and it's taken until now to finally get the best out of the new one.  I took theses photos as part of an update for my website. I thought the Delphis pages were looking a bit tired, and I was also starting to think that I was getting tired of Delphis.  But these photos have made me change my mind and realise what first drew me to collecting theses beautiful pots.  I couldn't wait to share them here.  

From the top down they're painted by: Jean Millership, Pamela Bevans and Patricia Wells. All painted within a couple of years of each other, between1967 and 1970.  Each a little galaxy of colour, 30 odd years before the humble space telescope and my camera finally got focused.

Making room

As much as i love the no 49 Delphis pin dishes I cant buy new ones without making a bit of space so there are 3 here that are going on eBay.  The top one is painted by Carol Cutler, in the middle Lynn Gregory and lastly Patricia Wells.

Gorgeous Delphis 49

I thought I had enough of these little 5" round pin dishes, but then I saw this one languishing on eBay in Alberta, Canada and had to help it back to my collection.  It was painted by Patricia Wells and has a blue dolphin mark that dates it to about 1966 or '67.

Swinderby Pin Dish

This 5 inch Delphis pin dish, painted by Margaret Anderson at the end of the 1960's, was the only pot I came away with from the Swinderby fair this week. Maybe all the best stuff was sold on the first day.  Anyway, wish cash still in my pocket maybe I'll have better luck at the Newark fair on Friday.

Mary Albon Pin Dish

It's a while since I bought any Delphis pots and I've had this shape no. 49 pin dish for a good few months now, so its high time I posted a photo.  This one was painted by Mary Albon between 1970 and 1972.  I had a similar yellow dish that I sold on eBay a few years ago, which was bought by Mary Albon herself.  Which is when she told me that the dates she is listed as working on Delphis in the Hayward and Atterbury book (1972-74) are in fact out by 2 years.

Delphis 49er Janet Laird

There's a lot of detail here for a small 5" diameter dish.  It was painted by Janet Laird who joined Poole Pottery in 1969 and was Delphis supervisor for 3 years from 1970 until 1974.  A lot of Janet's work was sold overseas but this one I found in the UK on a trip last weeks to the Newark fair.  

I've become friends with Janet since starting this blog and over the past few months she's shared some lovely stories about her life at Poole Pottery and wonderful examples of her work since then.  Janet still makes beautiful pottery at her studio in Dorset under her married name Janet Parker Laird and there's a link to Janet's own blog on the left.  I have some other images of Janet's early work at Poole Pottery that I'll post soon.

Poole Studio 5" pin dish

There have been a few of these dishes knocking about on eBay in the past few years.  I'm not sure how many were made or maybe I've been seeing the same few being re-traded.  This one came from there too. It has an early TV studio mark that dates it to between 1962 and 1964.

Cracking Jean Millership Pin Dish

As soon as I saw this on eBay I was determined to win it.  Jean Millership did some really striking no. 49 pin dishes.  There's only 5 inches to play with, so they work really well with simple bold patterns like this.
